Abstract Expressionist Paintings: Father's Day Series (January - March 1999)

It was Erika's twenty fifth birthday, and as part of her gift I offered to pay for eye exam and contact lenses. It was my way of being supportive towards her dance career, she needed contacts so that she could see her dance instructor more clearly while at class.

While sitting in the optical waiting room I asked for a pencil and paper from the lady at the reception counter.  It was then that I did the drawing to the left.

Study for the Father's Day Series. Graphite on paper. 4 x 6 inches. Jan 2000.

Once we arrived back home I stretched the canvas and prepared it with rabbit skin glue. I had a lot of trouble sleeping that night... for I was waiting for the size to dry so that could begin painting.  It was important to me to keep the natural appearance of the cotton duck, in an effort to preserve a rawness from the foundations of the materials. Some how merely priming the canvas with white gesso did not seem right.
