Marriage - when two lungs breathe as one: (March - April 2001)

The series of paintings initially started out as a self assigned exercise devoted to rediscovering an earlier series of paintings titled: Ice field.  But as the creative progress uncoiled so did the direction of the work...

In the process of creating the organic structure of the composition started to resemble a set of lungs... harvested in a ribcage.  The positive and negative space in the painting polarized into a graphic representation more than a painterly painting.

Her and Him

Like every bird

she was free to fly

in his sky

she spread her wings

in his night

he tripped

he fell

just a little hell

and they died together.

Being married is not easily, it has its obvious rewards. Yet it involves a great deal of compromise.  Let me give an example; I hate going to get food at the Supermarket, but Erika loves it...   So first thing on Monday morning I walk with Erika to get food.  She makes an effort to focus on what is required and not daydream by reading all the ingredients in her effort to select of what item to purchase. I push the buggy... the process takes several hours.

By the time we get back home the time is almost 11:30 - 12 o'clock.  The natural light before noon is incredible the fresh rays of light, the angle of the sun rays as they reflect off the dew drops on the plants. The stillness in the air, the birds and frogs singing. By the time we return I am bursting to paint - but morning dew has washed away  and the sun has risen - mid day has started. But Monday morning I go to Erika, and work on our marriage.

two lovers

melting into one in the night

their blue veins

flowers need rain

he kissed her on the lips

her lipstick was bleeding

candle wax

water fall

fallin'

fallin'

fallin' in love
