World Map Series: (July -Aug 2001) world map paintings

After the purchase of our house I felt it was time for a change.... square canvases. The is the first series I have ever taken on a theme that has an equal length to width dimension to it. Almost all the painting I have done in the past have had a rectangular (4 x 6)... similar to a kodak photo film processing finish. Rectangular canvases have a space that easily allows the painter to create diagonals in the compositions...

Last year Muffiy Gallery invited me to participate in a Christmas Group Exhibition. Harry (the gallery owner) was so certain that I would participate that he included my name on the poster and promotional material. He gave me several months notice to create work... but the submitted work had to be 14 x 14 inches.... square. Initially when I was invited to participate I when to Atlantis (art supply store) and purchased 12 pairs of 14 inch stretchers.

For two months I had these canvases occupping my studio. At the time I was working on my Encounters Series and Beatle Juice Series... and unfortunately I never could adjust my mind set to render a square composition and thus relunctantly was unable to participate in the exhibition at Muffgy Gallery.

Around Christmas my studio at Carpenters Road was bing up for redevelopment... we were being kicked out. I had until Januarary first to pack up my stuff. This was not easy to deal with. I lost it and smashed a great number of canvases including all the 14 x 14 inch canvases... and it was not until another eight months that I was able to bring myself to create work that was square.

It was like sleeping with an alarm clock that even in your dreams you know will go off. So I knew that I would have to challenge myself to create work that was square. You will notice that all the paintings are 36 x 36 inches or 40 x 40 inches... yes squares.

Over the years I have never accepted a commission. For what ever reasons: too stuborn, too proud, too focused on current concepts to be distracted, fear of rejection that the client would not be satisfied with end result...and I would be left with a painting that... ?
