The street was named Catherine, during the latter part of the 19th Century, in the honour of the Great Catherine of Russia. The Eastview municipality decided in 1948 to change the name of that street to Barrette in recognition of the Saint-Charles parish priest, Francois-Xavier Barrette. He was the resident priest , since 1912, at the Saint-Charles parish. Francois-Xavier Barrette was born in the village of Sainte-Melanie, near Joliette, on the 6th of December 1877. He was ordained in Ottawa by Bishop Mgr Duhamel in 1905. He replaced Father Fillaudeau who hd the distinction of being the founding priest of the Saint-Charles parish in 1908. Francois-Xavier Barrette was named Monsignor for his distinguished service by Pope Plus XII in 1954. The next year he founded a company of Zouave soldiers that served the parish until 1974. He died in the March 1962 in a house located not very far from the Saint-Charles Church on Barrette Street. above text written by Leo Paquette (Perspectives Vanier - Newpaper April 2006 Vol. 3 No 5) |
