The location of the painting plus the subject matter turned me off painting the canvas. But it was how all the elements and structures interact that captivated my attention.

The telephone wires dissecting / cutting across the sky line and right through the entire painting provides a horizontal movement / balance. To be honest I was nervous about adding the middle telephone wire. With the painting being rather large and it being in the final stages near completion I knew it was important that there was not mistake. I really turned my mind off and did not think. I visualized painting the telephone wire several times. I was not sure how it would turn out - it was critical for I knew if it failed the painting would like a function.

The red do not enter signs added to the color range. The yellow fire water tap and yellow street lights… it helped make the green brushes come to life.

The diagonal fire ladders on the building were something that made the building unique. Having the lading being the facing side of the building made the structure less forward. By having the ladders there the viewer can look at the building rather than the building push out. Imagine if the ladders were not there. The energy of the building would really be different. Already the building is very dominating. Somehow the ladders soften the structure.

A drawing from sketch book - March 2005.

The pavement touches the horizon line and the diagonal cross section.

The black Cornerstone sign is ¼ and ¾ position of the building balance.

The edge of the block building is fingers off to the right of the centre point.

The V line sky counter balances the space thus pulling the eye to circle and open up the composition
