Encounters with Edouard Manet: The Execution of Maximilian

Micro Gallery print out.

It was Jasper Jones interpretation of this painting that completely overwhelmed me. Infact it had such a profound effect that one could say that he inspired me so much... that I felt compelled to undertake my own Encounters series.

Jasper Jones did his encounter with Manet's work... I tried to do drawings / studies of this Manet's work in the gallery. But it was too difficult. The cut out canvases (geometerically) overpowered me into abstraction... and I felt that I could interpret this particular painting in so many manners.

Encounters with Edouard Manet (The Execution of Maximilian). oil on linen. 32 x 48 inches. Fall 2000. Price £1400.

To ground myself I decided to look for a post card of the painting in the book store... some to bring back to my studio. Much to my disappointment the book store did not stock this particular painting. Rather I resorted to the Micro Gallery. It is a great research tool where images and commentary on all the paintings in the collection are kept on computer. I printed out several pages (one included on top right) to aid me in my research to undertake my own Encounters series.

In my research of this painting I found it interest to read that after the artist's death the canvas was cut up into smaller fragments, some of which were sold separately. Edgar Degas eventually purchased all surviving fragments and reassembled them on a single canvas.
