Redundant: a series of black and white abstract expressionist figurative paintings.

Initially I titled this series of paintings The Shadow Man, but a week later I lost my job and was made redundant. Consequently I have retitled the series of paintings to 'Redundant'. I had worked at this company for just over two years. At the time of being made redundant my wife was 32 weeks pregnant and we were expecting our first child in several weeks. Losing my job came as a shock... I was given three days and a half days notice.

Life can be very humbling. Two weeks later I was approached by a Community Centre to teach art to children who have been affected by the war. I am really looking forward to this.

The below works on paper are studies for the Redundant paintings. I had no intentions of doing the Redunant paintings... the drawings came first and later after doing the drawings I wished to explore the ideas on a larger format. I have been making my own egg tempera. I crack an egg... use the yolk, put a few tablespoons of dry pigment and grind it up. I love the fast drying quality of egg tempera. You have to really have a soft touch and work very quickly... many things surface that you do not expect.
